Postby biglargeone » Sun May 19, 2019 10:12 pm

Before you laugh at me, I know its an air cooled two cylinder Mercury motor [violin.gif]   Neat set up. Right angle starter, and grooves for rope start on pulley.I am guessing mid 40s?   Thanks for the help

.....recoil on one side.....v pulley on the other.......doubt if for a chain saw......more likely for a water pump or gen-set drive ?  unique find  !!

pulley could have been added to a chainsaw motor.

Not likely a chain saw with a three element v belt drive.  The motor has feet and the intent of the normal recoil starter is to keep the person starting the motor away from the business end.  Could be a motor for a big rotary saw or some kind of industrial equipment like a pump.  From the feet it was meant to be mounted down and the v belt creates a good bit of lateral load so it needed to be bolted down to some kind of frame so that the v belt tension stays constant.

Another odd thing. There apears to be two gas caps so it could be mounted both ways? Not a chain saw, has a throttle control that locks.

We have in our collection a couple of Mercury auxiliary power engines.  Mercury made standby generators, pumps, drones and chainsaws for the Military during WWII.

The bottom cap is likely a drain so that you could drain the fuel and store it dry.   My guess is most likely a marine pump or generator.  That would explain the need to drain the fuel so that it could be stored on a ship with the fuel tank dry.   The use of a V belt drive would let you run the motor at a different speed than the generator.  That is, you end up with a pretty heavy gen set if you only run the motor at 1800 or 3600 rpm.  If you run the motor at 5000 rpm you have a motor that is a lot smaller, but to get 60 cycles you have to run the generator at 1800 or 3600 rpm.

I think I've found your motor in this award page:

Let's fix it now - before we launch the boat.

Mercury made one of the very first high pressure portable water pumps for fighting wild land fire.

I always thought the auxiliary drive engine would look GREAT on an old school minibike!

REO Motors made a super cute little air cooled inboard 4-stroke kit.  I used to have just the engine from one, but don't know where it ended up, but here is a picture.  Sorry to steer the thread away from the Mercury!

When I was a kid I had a minibike that had a Reo motor just like that on it.  It was "laid back" so it was lower than a typical B&S mower motor..  Good well built motors.  They had aluminum heads and it was easy to strip out the spark plug holes, but the motor was well made.
